Ice Dams and Roof Icicles: Causes and Permanent Fixes

Spectacular icicles are not winter decor: they are your heating escaping through the attic. Here is why the ice forms, why heating cables solve nothing — and what eliminates it for good.

Every winter, the same houses grow the same icicles. It has nothing to do with luck or a "hard winter": it is a symptom, visible from the street, of heat escaping through the attic. Here is why ice dams form, why temporary fixes never solve anything — and what actually eliminates them for good.

Why do ice dams form on your roof?

An ice dam forms when heat from your home escapes into the attic, warms the roof and melts the snow from underneath. The meltwater runs down to the roof overhang, which stays cold, and refreezes there. Layer after layer, a ridge of ice builds up, blocks drainage and traps water on the roof.

The key point: the snow is not melting because of the sun — it is melting because of you. Your home's heat rises to the ceiling, passes through insufficient insulation or leaks through unsealed openings, and turns your attic into a warm zone. The roof deck should be as cold as the outside air, across its entire surface. When it is not, every snowfall becomes a reservoir of water waiting to move.

The mechanism, step by step

  1. Heat from the house migrates into the attic — by conduction through insulation that is too thin, and by convection through air leaks (attic hatch, recessed lights, range hood, top of the walls).
  2. The middle of the roof warms above freezing; the snow melts from its base.
  3. The water slides under the snow cover down to the roof overhang, which projects beyond the heated walls and stays frozen.
  4. The water refreezes at the edge. The ridge grows, and icicles appear on the eavestroughs.
  5. The water pooling behind the dam backs up under the shingles — which are designed to shed water running down, not to hold back water that stands still.

Why your neighbour does not have any

Two houses side by side get the same snow and the same cold. The one with a properly insulated, sealed and ventilated attic keeps a uniformly cold roof: the snow stays put and melts in the spring, into the gutters. The other one manufactures ice. Spectacular icicles are not evidence of a harsh winter — they show you which of the two houses is heating its roof.

Do heating cables and de-icing actually fix the problem?

No. Heating cables and de-icing deal with ice that has already formed — never with the heat that produces it. They are recurring expenses — electricity, labour, replacements — that come back every winter, while the root cause keeps wearing down your roof and inflating your heating bill.

There is something worse than inefficiency: false security. A heating cable that works masks the symptom while the escaping heat keeps costing you money — a deficient attic can account for a major share of a home's heat loss. You pay to heat the outdoors, then you pay again to melt the result.

What is the permanent solution to ice dams?

The permanent solution is to keep the roof cold: seal the air leaks in the ceiling, insulate the attic to R-50, and ensure continuous attic ventilation. When the heat stays inside the house and outside air flows under the roof deck, the snow stops melting from underneath — and the ice stops forming.

The three components work together, and the order matters:

  • Air sealing first. We seal the leaks in the ceiling plane — attic hatch, recessed lights, plumbing and electrical penetrations, top of the walls. Blowing insulation over active air leaks is like putting a scarf over an open coat.
  • Insulation to R-50 next. Current standards target roughly R-50 in the attic; many Quebec homes built before 1990 are nowhere near it. Blown cellulose or fibreglass brings the attic up to target — measured, with depth markers in place.
  • Ventilation last. Clear soffits (with baffles so the insulation cannot block them) and adequate exhaust at the ridge keep the attic at outdoor temperature, winter and summer.

When is the roof itself the problem?

The roof is the problem when attic ventilation is deficient or when the ice and water protection membrane is missing at the eaves. A roof at the end of its life — tired shingles, worn flashings — also lets the water trapped behind a dam get inside far more easily.

Some signs point to the roof rather than the insulation alone: blocked or missing soffits, no exhaust at the ridge, shingles that curl or shed granules, recurring leaks in the same spot despite a decent attic. In those cases, a properly executed roof replacement includes ice and water membrane at the eaves and valleys, new flashings — and optimized attic ventilation built in, not sold as an option.

This is also why assessing both together makes sense: when the roof and the insulation are handled by the same contractor, nobody passes the buck between "it's the roof" and "it's the attic." We inspect the whole envelope, measure, document — and fix what needs fixing, in the right order.

What damage can an ice dam cause?

An ice dam traps water on the roof and forces it under the shingles: leaks into ceilings and walls, soaked insulation, mould. Its weight tears off eavestroughs, warps the fascia and breaks shingles. Every additional winter compounds damage that stays invisible from inside the house for a long time.

  • Water infiltration — the water backed up behind the dam slips under the shingles, soaks the roof deck and eventually stains ceilings and the tops of walls. The worst often happens during a thaw, when everything melts at once.
  • Soaked insulation — wet insulation loses its insulating value, which accelerates the melting even more: the problem feeds itself.
  • Eavestroughs and fascia — ice is heavy. Torn or deformed gutters, split fascia, rim boards left exposed to water.
  • Mould — moisture trapped in the attic and walls creates ideal conditions for fungal contamination, with everything that implies for your indoor air quality.
